What this tour is

Four hours on the flat side of the river, walking the axis that 19th-century Budapest built for itself: from Heroes’ Square down Andrássy Avenue to the Parliament. It is a walk through the decades when Hungary had money, ambition and a millennium to celebrate.

Pest is a grid, it is level, and it is where Budapest actually lives. If Buda is the view, Pest is the city.

The route, roughly

Heroes’ Square was built for the 1896 millennium, marking a thousand years since the Magyar tribes arrived. The colonnade holds the statues of Hungarian leaders — and the figures in it have been swapped out more than once as the politics changed, which is a story in itself.

Andrássy Avenue runs 2.3 kilometres from the square to the city centre and is a UNESCO site. Under it is the M1 metro line, opened in 1896 and the oldest underground railway in continental Europe. The carriages are small enough that tall passengers stoop.

The Opera House on the same avenue reopened in 2022 after a long restoration. Exterior on this walk; interior tours run separately and are ticketed.

The Basilica holds St Stephen’s mummified right hand, which is exactly as strange to see as it sounds. The dome terrace has the best central view in the city — better than Fisherman’s Bastion for photographing Buda.

The Parliament is the third-largest parliament building in the world and was, when built, wildly out of proportion to the country it served. That was rather the point.

About Parliament tickets

This is the question we get most. Interior tours of the Parliament are run by the building itself, on a timed-entry basis, and they sell out — particularly in summer and around national holidays. There is a separate, cheaper ticket tier for EU citizens.

We don’t include those tickets, because we can’t book them on your behalf at a useful price. What we do is tell you exactly how and when to book them yourself, and build the walk around your entry time if you have one.

Practical notes

Distance. Around 5km on the flat, at a talking pace, with stops.
The M1 metro is worth one stop just for the experience. A single ticket covers it.
Shade. Andrássy is tree-lined for most of its length, which matters in July and August when the city regularly hits 33°C.
Sunday mornings are the quietest time on the whole route.

Who this suits

Anyone who wants to understand why Budapest looks the way it does. It works particularly well as a first tour, because the axis gives you a mental map of the city that everything else hangs off.
