Why it's worth going

The prettier of the two, and the one worth seeing after dark: the facade projection runs every half hour and the square is built around it rather than around the stalls.

What to expect

A ring of stalls around the square with the Basilica lit at one end. The projection onto the facade is the reason to come after dark, and it repeats often enough that you do not need to time your arrival. There is a small ice rink for children. The square is smaller than Vörösmarty tér, so it feels busier faster, but it also empties quickly once the projection ends.

If you only have one evening, this is the market to choose — not because the stalls are better, but because the setting is doing most of the work. Combining the two is easy: they are about ten minutes apart on foot, and doing the Basilica second means finishing with the better view. Both run on the same calendar, from late November into the first days of January.

Build a day around this

Tell us you are coming for Advent at the Basilica and we will build the rest of the day around it — where to be and when, somewhere good to eat nearby, and the parts of Budapest most visitors walk straight past.
