Day Trips from Budapest, Ranked
Travel time is what decides a day trip, and it is the number most listings bury. Szentendre is 40 minutes each way. Tokaj is 2h15 — four and a half hours in the car for one day out.

Szentendre
The easy one. Serbian Orthodox churches, ochre houses, a long history as an artists’ colony, and a main square painted several thousand times. Genuinely pretty and genuinely touristy — both are true.
The ticket trap: the HÉV H5 leaves from Batthyány tér, but Szentendre is outside the Budapest fare zone. A normal city travel pass does not cover the whole journey; you need a supplement for the stretch past the boundary. This catches out a lot of people at the barrier.
Most museums close on Mondays.
Lake Balaton
Central Europe’s largest lake. The only decision that matters is which shore:
- North — hills, volcanic buttes, the abbey at Tihany, the wine. Go here.
- South — shallow water for a very long way out, which is why it fills with families in July. Siófok is the party end.
Tihany Abbey was founded in 1055 and its founding charter is the oldest surviving document containing Hungarian words. Lavender in June and July.
Seasons matter here more than anywhere. November to March the lake is beautiful and almost everything around it is shut.
Tokaj
Vineyards here were classified by quality in 1737, well before Bordeaux. It is a UNESCO landscape, and the cellars are cut into volcanic rock with black mould on the walls that is part of the process, not a hygiene problem.
Aszú is the sweet wine, graded 3 to 6 puttonyos. But Tokaj also makes serious dry Furmint, which is what Hungarians actually drink and what visitors never expect.
Be honest with yourself about the driving. Four and a half hours in a car for one day out is worth it if wine is why you came. It is not worth it as a general “day in the countryside”.
The one nobody mentions
Eger — baroque town, a castle that held off an Ottoman siege in 1552, and the Bull’s Blood wine cellars in the Valley of the Beautiful Women. About two hours each way, and a better all-round day than Tokaj if you want history as well as wine.
