Why it's worth going

It is the Christmas market without the crush: the same mulled wine and chimney cake, in a town you would want to walk around anyway.

What to expect

Stalls along Dumtsa Jenő utca and around Fő tér, with candle-lighting on the advent wreath each Sunday and concerts from local musicians and the town's arts institutions. Smaller and quieter than Budapest's markets, and more genuinely local — the crafts are made by people who live there. Weekdays are very quiet; Sunday afternoons are the busiest and the best.

Szentendre is forty minutes from Budapest on the HÉV suburban train, and in December it is a different proposition from the summer, when the coach parties own the main square. The cobbled streets, the Serbian Orthodox churches and the ochre and pink houses take the winter light well. The exact 2026 dates had not been announced when this page was last checked — the market has reliably opened on the last weekend of November and run to Epiphany, but confirm before travelling.

Build a day around this

Tell us you are coming for Advent in Szentendre and we will build the rest of the day around it — where to be and when, somewhere good to eat nearby, and the parts of Szentendre most visitors walk straight past.
