Why it's worth going
You watch an orchestra being shaped in real time, which is something you almost never get to see. Tickets cost a fraction of a normal concert and the playing is professional.
What to expect
Competition rounds during the day and into the evening, open to the public. You hear the same passage several times under different hands, which makes the conductor's job unusually legible — even if you have never thought about it before. Sessions are long; nobody minds if you come for part of one.
Named for Georg Solti, who was born in Budapest and left in 1939, the competition brings young conductors to the city to work with a Hungarian orchestra under scrutiny. It is a specialist event with a general appeal: the final rounds in particular are as tense as sport, and the audience is full of musicians. If your stay falls in the first third of October and you want an evening that is not a restaurant, this is an easy and cheap yes.
